New Jersey drivers, we feel your need for speed. We know that you love to hit the ground running and you hunger for that exciting rev of the engine when you hit the accelerator. That's why you're considering high-performance Subaru vehicles like the 2020 WRX and BRZ.
Trust us, both sports cars are off to the races, but they do differ in their own unique ways. To help you determine which one you want to take to the track in the Wayne, Parsippany, and Morristown areas, the team at Paul Miller Subaru compared the Subaru WRX vs. Subaru BRZ. Check out what we learned below.
2020 Subaru WRX vs Subaru BRZ Power and MPG

Racers, start your engines! When you do, you'll feel your car roar to life, whether you're behind the wheel of the Subaru WRX or Subaru BRZ. Both models come standard with a 2.0L engine that doesn't hold back. You can check out those specs below:
 | 2020 Subaru WRX | 2020 Subaru BRZ |
Standard engine | 2.0L SUBARU BOXER® I-4 | 2.0L SUBARU BOXER® I-4 |
Max. Horsepower/Torque | 268 horsepower/258 lb-ft | 205 horsepower/156 lb-ft |
Max EPA-Estimated MPG (manual transmission) | 21 MPG city 27 MPG highway | 21 MPG city 29 MPG highway |
Max EPA-Estimated MPG (automatic transmission) | 18 MPG city 24 MPG highway | 24 MPG city 33 MPG highway |
As you may have noticed, both sports cars let you choose whether you'll take complete control with a 6-speed manual transmission or sit back and let your car do the work for you with a 6-speed automatic transmission.
Overall, the WRX delivers more engine power than the BRZ. Not only does it have a higher horsepower output with its standard engine, it also has an available 2.5L turbocharged SUBARU BOXER® I-4 engine that produces 310 horsepower.
The trade-off, however, is that the BRZ can generally get farther between fuel-ups, especially when equipped with the automatic transmission.
Handling Specs for the Subaru WRX and BRZ
Whether you race along a dirt path or a paved track, you need to know that your sports car is going to stay steady and stable as you head for the finish line. Both the Subaru WRX and BRZ deliver here, but they do so differently. Take a look at their drivetrains below:
- Subaru WRX:Â Subaru Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive (AWD)
- Subaru BRZ:Â Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD)
The Subaru WRX comes standard with the Subaru Symmetrical AWD system that works with the Traction Control System to keep all four wheels moving forward evenly. It actively monitors your roadway conditions and automatically adjusts torque distribution to maintain steady traction control.
With Active Torque Vectoring, this helps you to take sharp corners. The all-wheel control also provides additional slip support when you're travelling on dirt roads or driving through the snow.
The Subaru BRZ, on the other hand, comes with RWD. This may struggle a little more in the snow and dirt compared to the WRX, but RWD, paired with the standard TORSEN® limited-slip rear differential, helps you corner much more precisely. This extra precision may give you those extra seconds of gain you need to win the race.
