The Outback and Legacy share a pair of engines. The base powertrain in both models is a 2.5L 4-cylinder SUBARU BOXER® engine. It's capable of providing both vehicles with 260 horsepower and 178 lb-ft of torque.

This allows the Subaru Outback to tow 2,700 pounds. It can also make your crossover more efficient with an EPA-estimated 26 MPG city and 32 MPG highway*. While the Subaru Legacy isn't set up for towing, it also offers excellent fuel economy with an EPA-estimated 26 MPG city and 32 MPG highway.

The other available powertrain is a turbocharged 2.4L turbocharged 4-cylinder SUBARU BOXER® engine. With this under the hood, the Outback can get up to an EPA-estimated 26 MPG city and 21 highway. It'll also be able to tow up to 3,500 pounds. Meanwhile, the Legacy uses it to get up to an EPA-estimated 27 MPG city and 35 MPG highway.*

The Legacy and Outback offer seating for up to five people. Cloth seats come standard in both, but leather upholstery is also available. Each model is focused on offering a comfortable drive and room to stretch out.

There are 105.5 cubic feet of passenger space in the Legacy. The Outback is slightly larger and offers 109 cubic feet of passenger room. They're both capable of carrying a lot of cargo, too. There's 15.1 cubic feet of trunk space in the Legacy. As a crossover, the Outback has a large, round trunk. It has 32.6 cubic feet of space behind the back seats and 75.6 cubic feet of cargo room with the seats folded down.
