SUVs with good gas mileage are a great choice for running errands, your daily commute, and going on adventures on the weekend. The 2021 Subaru Crosstrek and Toyota RAV4 PRIME are two great options for adventurers around Parsippany, Wayne, and Morristown, NJ. They each offer lots of space, good fuel economy, and capable drivetrains.
Which one is right for you, though? To help you decide, Paul Miller Subaru put them up against each other in this 2021 Subaru Crosstrek vs. Toyota RAV4 PRIME comparison.
Subaru Crosstrek vs Toyota RAV4 PRIME: Fuel-Efficient SUVs
Whether you're interested in a gas-powered SUV or a hybrid, the Subaru Crosstrek can cover a lot of ground before it has to refuel or recharge. It offers a 2.5L 4-cylinder engine that gets up to an EPA-estimated 27 city/34 highway MPG.
The Crosstrek Hybrid features a one-two punch of a gas-powered engine and an electric battery. With the two switching off each other, it can deliver an EPA-estimated driving range of up to 480 miles.
To prep for that drive, just plug your Crosstrek into a regular old outlet. When hooked up to a 120-volt outlet, it can be fully charged in about five hours. If you're in a hurry, you can use a 240-volt cable and recharge in about two hours.
The Toyota RAV4 PRIME also offers an efficient hybrid powertrain, but it takes a lot longer to charge it. With a 240-volt cable, you'll have to wait up to four and a half hours to charge your SUV. You'll have to plan ahead if all you've got is a 120-volt cable. It can take up to 12 hours to charge your RAV4 PRIME.
Crosstrek vs RAV4 PRIME: Interior Space & Style
Both SUVs are built to carry everything you need. Each one comes with a large trunk and folding second-row seats. The Subaru offers a more comfortable drive, though. With 100.9 cubic feet of passenger space, everyone has enough room to stretch out. Tall drivers will especially appreciate its 39.8 inches of headroom and 43.1 inches of legroom.
The Toyota RAV4 PRIME has a slightly smaller cabin. With only 98.9 cubic feet of passenger space, it's a little more cramped. You'll feel the difference behind the wheel, too, with only 37.7 inches of headroom and 41 inches of legroom.
In addition to offering extra space, the Crosstrek cabin is tough and stylish. Cloth seats come standard, but leather seats and StarTex® water-repellent upholstery are also available. Unfortunately, the Toyota doesn't offer leather seats or any material that can help you keep the cabin clean.Â
Subaru Crosstrek vs Toyota RAV4 PRIME: Capability
Whether you're going on a camping trip or there's snow in the forecast, you can count on the Subaru Crosstrek to come through for you. It has standard Subaru Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive and features both Vehicle Dynamics Control and a Traction Control System.
On top of keeping you in control in tough conditions, the Crosstrek also rides high. With an 8.7-inch ground clearance, you can take on tough trails, bumpy roads, and drive through some shallow streams. You'll even be prepared for steep hills with a 28.6-degree departure angle.
The Toyota RAV4 PRIME also comes with all-wheel drive, but its drivetrain isn't as versatile. It also sits a little lower to the ground, so it's not as prepared for rugged roads. Its 8.2-inch ground clearance drops its departure angle down to only 21.5 degrees.
