Pondering over whether to drive the 2021 Subaru Crosstrek or the 2021 Mazda CX-5? If you're a Parsippany, Wayne, or Morristown, NJ area driver and require more in-depth information to put one crossover or another on the top of your list, you'll find out here. Before you decide, Paul Miller Subaru steps in to give you the lowdown on both vehicles.
Subaru Crosstrek vs MAZDA CX-5 Exterior

The Crosstrek springs forward with its lightweight body that sports a curb weight of 3,188 pounds when equipped with the automatic transmission. It extends 176.5 inches in length, spans 71 inches in width, and reaches a height of 63.6 inches. The compact stature makes the Subaru easy to pull in and out of tight spots, especially on a crowded downtown street.
Coming in at 3,552 pounds of curb weight is the Mazda CX-5. It stretches to a length of 179.1 inches and a height of 65.4. In width, this crossover measures 72.5 inches. Overall, it's larger than its competitor, so fitting into a parallel parking space downtown may be more challenging.
Subaru Crosstrek vs MAZDA CX-5Â Cabin Space and Comfort
Both cabins seat five riders with comfort and offer similar amenities, such as upgraded leather surfaces and heated front seats. When you sit in the front of the Subaru, though, you get plenty of space for your legs at 43.1 inches. It also comes with 55.6 inches of shoulder room in the back seat.
The Mazda gives drivers over two fewer inches of legroom at 41 inches. Slightly less shoulder room can be found in the back at 54.8 inches.
If you want the open air feeling of a moonroof, both vehicles give you the option. Every trim of the Crosstrek except the entry-level trim offers you a power tilt/sliding moonroof. In the Mazda, their available power sliding-glass moonroof does not come in the two base trims; plus, the moonroof does not tilt open for just a bit of a breeze.
Subaru Crosstrek vs MAZDA CX-5 Performance
When it comes to performance, the Crosstrek packs it in for all terrain. For shifting gears, it uses a standard 6-speed manual transmission but can be upgraded to the Lineartronic® Continuously Variable Transmission.
The standard Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive means it handles any change in weather or road conditions and offers 8.7 inches in ground clearance. You can pair this with available dual-function X-MODE®, which includes specialized settings for snow, mud, or dirt.
With the Mazda CX-5, every trim uses the SKYACTIV®-Drive 6-speed automatic transmission. FWD comes standard, but you can change it to the optional i-Activ AWD®. It only gives you 7.5 inches of ground clearance, so your ride may be a little rockier.
If you prefer the hybrid Crosstrek, you can expect an EPA-estimated fuel efficiency of 90 MPGe and up to 480 miles of total vehicle range.
Despite the multiple trims that make up the Mazda CX-5 lineup, no hybrid trim exists. Also, it provides you with less efficient gas mileage. With FWD, it can achieve an EPA-estimated 25 city/31 highway MPG. If you opt for AWD, it can achieve an EPA-estimated 24 city/30 highway MPG.
